Initial construction of the Port of Fujairah began in 1978 as part of the economic development of the United Arab Emirates. Full operations began in 1983 and since then, the port has embarked on a continuous process to improve its facilities. It is located on the east coast of the United Arab Emirates, approximately 70 nautical miles from the Strait of Hormuz.
Its strategic position has proven to be attractive for fuel intake, supplies and services. The most important activity in Fujairah is the refueling of ships, both mooring and anchoring, although the port continues to develop as a cargo port.
Fujairah comprises a number of anchorage areas and ports: Fujairah Anchorage, Khor Fakkan, the neighboring Khor Kalba, and Sharjah. The development of this area began during the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s, when it was used as an alternative for tankers waiting to load crude oil in the Persian Gulf. Fujairah's oil storage capacity is around 13.3 Mn cubic meters.
